meetTohma

Space cadet.
Your science teammate for Sec 1 Science.
Never leaves a teammate behind.

Hi, I'm Tohma!

I'm 13 and I moved to Singapore from overseas.
Now I'm in a local secondary school, in PG3 subject banding.
My job here is simple: study beside you and make Sec 1 Science feel doable.

Tohma is a character, not a real student.
My robot crewmate Bolt keeps the notes in order.
Zip the alien cheers us on.

Player profile

Age: 13
Height: 165 cm
School: Singapore secondary school, Sec 1, PG3 subject banding

Tohma's story

Made by a Singapore parent who saw a gap in how students study.

Then the tests started.
Weighted Assessment 1, 2 and 3 are tests.
There are three rounds across Terms 1 to 3.
Each carries a share of the yearly grade, and my school sets the share.
Term 4 brings the End-of-Year exam, one big test on the whole year.

Moving to a new country and a new school means new subjects, new words and new ways of being tested.
Tohma speaks three languages, but science words in English were a whole new level.

I used to treat revision like a boss fight I could win in one night.
Cram, panic, repeat.
When my grades dipped, my parents sat me down for a serious talk.
I was totally cooked.
So I stopped cramming and started doing a little every day: short notes, flashcards, then Quick 10.

Now I study at my desk with Bolt and Zip, and I tell everyone the same thing: small steps, every day.

Why short notes matter

Long notes are hard to start and easy to skip.
Short notes are quick to read and easy to repeat.
They are light enough to carry.
Reading them again and again helps the key ideas stick.

Tohma-speak

A quick translator for parents.

Fully focused. No phone, no distractions.
No cap
For real, I'm not joking.
W
A win. Got 10 out of 10? That's a W.
Cooked
In trouble. Studying a little each day keeps you from getting cooked.
Mid
Just okay. Aim higher, then go again.

How a mission works

Notes are the briefing.
Short, clear, with the traps examiners love.
Flashcards are training drills.
Flip, check, repeat.
Quiz is the real test.
Answers come straight away.
Practice is where you level up.
Beat your own best score, then go again.

Tohma's training tips

Ten-minute sprints.
Study for ten minutes, then a tiny break.
Repeat.
The parking lot.
Keep a scrap paper for random thoughts.
Write them down, then come back to them later.
Study beside a buddy.
Starting is easier when someone is working next to you.
Open the notes and Tohma is right there with you.
Lost focus?
Flip one card.
It's the easiest way back in.

What science is

Science is the study of natural phenomena: anything that happens in the world around us.
It is not locked inside the lab.
Cooking rice, charging a phone and a rainy sky all involve it.

Remember these

Many civilisations built up scientific knowledge over centuries.
It rests on evidence, so it can change when new evidence is widely accepted.
Science is a human activity.
It starts with curious people asking questions.

02Ev

Evidence: words or numbers

Qualitative

Described in words, using the senses: colour, smell, texture, sound.

The liquid turned cloudy and smelled sour.

Quantitative

Measured with instruments.
Always a number and a unit.

The ice melted in 6 min.

We collect evidence with our senses, or with instruments that extend them, such as a thermometer or a stopwatch.
The same evidence can sometimes be explained in more than one way, so scientists keep testing and debating.

03Fi

A fair investigation

Ask a question
Make a testable hypothesis
Plan a fair test
Collect data
Analyse the data
Conclude and share

A hypothesis is a possible explanation you can test.
After you conclude, repeat the experiment to check that the results are reliable.

Variable	What it means	Example
Independent	The one thing you change	Amount of salt added
Dependent	What you measure	Time for the ice to melt (s)
Controlled	Kept the same so the test is fair	Mass of ice, water volume, starting temperature

Example question: does the amount of salt in water change how fast an ice cube melts?
Change only one variable at a time.

04Me

Measuring well

A measurement is a number plus a unit, such as 5.00 cm, 20 s or 100 g.

Quantity	SI unit	Other common units
Length	m	cm, mm
Mass	kg	g
Time	s	min, h
Volume	m³	cm³, mL
Temperature	K	°C

Accuracy vs precision

Accuracy is how close a reading is to the true value. Precision is how close repeated readings are to each other.

Two common errors

Zero error

The instrument reads something when it should read zero.
Press the tare button, or subtract the zero error from every reading.

Parallax error

Reading a scale from the wrong angle.
Put your eye level with the mark and look straight at the scale.

Worked example

An empty balance shows 0.2 g.
A stone shows 15.6 g.

true mass = 15.6 − 0.2 = 15.4 g

Random errors are unpredictable, so repeat the reading and take the average. Systematic errors are the same every time, such as a zero error, so correct each reading.

Gentle reminder"Human error" scores nothing by itself.
Name the error, for example parallax error when reading the measuring cylinder.

Staying safe in the lab

Hazard symbols

Read the label before you use any chemical.
The symbol tells you the main danger.

CorrosiveEats away skin, eyes and metals.

FlammableCatches fire easily.

OxidisingGives out oxygen, so fires burn harder.

ExplosiveMay explode when heated or shocked.

ToxicCan poison if swallowed, breathed in or touched.

Harmful or irritantCan irritate skin, eyes or nose.

Health hazardCan harm the body over time.

Gas under pressureCylinder may burst if heated.

Environmental hazardHarms living things in water or soil.

Bunsen burner flames

	Luminous flame	Non-luminous flame
Air hole	Closed	Open
Colour	Yellow	Blue
Heat	Cooler	Hotter
Use	Safety flame, easy to see	Heating

Lighting it

Check the air hole is closed.
Turn on the gas tap.
Hold the lighter over the barrel and click it.
Open the air hole only when you need to heat.

Safe habits

Wear safety goggles when heating or using chemicals.
Point test tubes away from people.
Never taste chemicals.
Waft gases towards your nose.
Tie back long hair and never leave a flame alone.
Report spills and breakages to your teacher at once.

Scientific values

Good scientists show curiosity, creativity, perseverance, open-mindedness, objectivity, integrity and responsibility.

06So

Science in society

Science and technology improve lives, and they can also cause harm.
Weigh both sides before deciding.

Example	Benefit	Harm or issue
Plastics	Light, cheap, waterproof	Not biodegradable, so it pollutes land and sea
Pesticides	Protect crops, bigger harvests	Kill useful insects, can build up in food chains
Antibiotics	Treat bacterial infections	Overuse can make bacteria resistant

Science has limits too.
It cannot yet cure every disease or predict earthquakes exactly, so we must use it responsibly.
